The Love of God
Michael A. Verdicchio

When it comes to the topic of the "Love of God" the first thing that must be considered is God's love to mankind. It is God Who initiated love for mankind, before the Fall, and after the Fall.

John 3:16:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The word, "world," in this verse does not mean every single thing on this planet. It represents people. The flowers and the trees are a wonderful part of God's creation. The animals and the bees are a splendid part of that creation. But God sent His Son to save mankind; human beings.

The invitation to receive everlasting life is wide open to anyone - whosoever! That should give you a pretty clear idea of God's desire for everyone to have everlasting life.

We ought to also note that having everlasting life is not conditioned by our good works or our love for God. It is conditioned on believing in His Son, the lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

But look carefully at the motive. Why did God send His Son so that whosoever believed in him would have everlasting life? God's motive was love. God so loved…

Romans 5:5 - 8
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Have you ever considered that if God was willing to commend His love toward us when we were in that condition, would He now love us any less? If He was willing to extend His love to us when we were ungodly, sinners, and without strength, how about now as born again ones?

Ephesians 2:4 and 5:
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Is His great love for us any less now?

I John 3:1a:
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:

I John 4:16:
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

God's very nature is love; God is love.

So, we can certainly talk about loving God and loving others, but let us always remember that God is the One Who initiated love. God loved us first.

I John 4:19:
We love him, because he first loved us.

And the love that God has for us does not change. He doesn't love you more when you pray and love you less when you don't. There is nothing that can separate you from the love of God.

Romans 8:38 and 39:
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
